Supplements to Stop Taking During Pregnancy
Let’s stop mega-dosing on synthetic supplements just because we’re pregnant.
Pregnancy isn’t a medical emergency.
It’s not a deficiency.
And it’s definitely not a reason to pick and choose isolated compounds to ingest under the guise of “nutrition.”
Yes, we absolutely need more food, more fat, and more protein as we grow a human.
And yes - most women do have real nutrient depletion due to pre-existing chronic stress, hormonal disruption, and food system collapse.
However - more supplements do not equal more support.
Here’s what I tell my clients - and the practitioners I mentor:
Pregnancy isn’t the time to throw everything at your body.
You are already processing a wild amount of biochemical data every single day:
⚙️ Shifts in hormone production
⚙️ Emotional recalibrations
⚙️ More food + fluid intake
⚙️ Expanded immune and circulatory systems
When you add unnecessary supplements - especially synthetic or stimulating ones - you actually tax your system more. You experience an increase in nausea, fatigue, and you deplete the very reserves you need for growth.
Your liver is already working overtime metabolizing surges in estrogen, progesterone, histamines, relaxin, and immune cells…
If you’re also stacking in extra niacin, choline, or mystery blends from a generic prenatal?
It’s not helping. It’s draining you.
This is what I teach about supplements in pregnancy:
What to STOP Taking During Pregnancy
• Generic multivitamins + prenatals with more than 5 ingredients
• Uppers like ashwagandha, ginseng, maca
• Detox supplements like DIM or liver cleanses
• Anything that’s increasing nausea, bloating, or fatigue (of course)
Honestly - most women instinctively quit their supplements early in pregnancy due to discomfort.
That’s not a failure. That’s your body showing you how to trust your reserves.
Supplements aren’t bad - but they become harmful when:
→ They require more effort to metabolize
→ They redirect internal resources away from hormonal balance and fetal development
Even natural remedies for things like anxiety, allergies, or headaches can throw your system off if they pull energy away from your reproductive process.
What’s Actually Supportive
If your body tolerates it without digestive stress (i.e. bloating, nausea), you may still benefit from:
• Methylated B-complex: B6, B12 + Folate
• Spirulina, bee pollen, algae (rich in B vitamins + minerals)
• Animal protein or organ meats
• High-fat whole foods: avocado, coconut oil, nut butters, grass-fed butter, red meat
• Omega-rich fats for blood sugar regulation + brain development
When to Get Professional Support
If you’re navigating any of the following, you need a customized approach - not just TikTok tips:
• Progesterone suppositories (oral or vaginal)
• History of miscarriage
• Blood sugar instability (hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, diabetes)
• Thyroid or autoimmune imbalances
• Any meds for anxiety, depression, or mood
This is not about fear.
It’s about discernment.
Your baby is made of your blood, your hormones, your reserves.
Let’s make those count—without wasting energy on synthetic overflow.
